I’m with Beth. The smiles are there very early: they tend to be flashes, a kind of shadow of a smile, because the little ones can’t manipulate their facial muscle yet.
By the way, plenty of people smile when they pass gas. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.
He’s looking more robust already. I’m getting the sense we have proud papa behind all these pictures.

I love it when they’re new and almost look like they’re smiling despite the fact that they are allegedly too young to smile.

I got to see his little smile up close last night. Some said he was just passing gas: I prefer to think he was dreaming about coming home.
