Huong Lan

I have certain sentimental attachments. One of these – as many of you know – is Huong Lan, the Vietnamese folk singer whose music is widely regarded as epitomizing the soul of Vietnam.

Here’s a beautiful song I haven’t heard in years. I must have worn out the cassette after playing it so much.

You may not understand Vietnamese, but the heartbreaking drama of this song is evident from the video. My guess is that the story derives from a classic work of Vietnamese literature called “The Tale of Kieu”.

In this concert Huong Lan teams up with Minh Vuong in what amounts to a musical cavalcade of Vietnamese culture and tradition.
