Behold, a shepherd!

The Most Reverend Jaime Soto will be our new diocesan ordinary after the retirement of Bishop William Weigand, which is said to be imminent. I did not have a favorable impression of Bishop Soto at first, considering the liberal diocese from which he came. But then I began reading some of his statements in the Catholic Herald, and was greatly encouraged.

Now, he is reported to have given a courageous speech (here’s the text) at a meeting of the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries in Long Beach. At least five people walked out during his presentation. He was politely invited to leave by the organizers, but insisted on staying to hear responses and answer questions.

Behold, a shepherd!

  1. A series of about eight speakers came to the microphone to express their unhappiness with what the bishop had said — and what they felt he had not said. One woman said, in essence, “We know what the Church says. What we wanted you to talk about is the value of our lived experience as lesbian women and gay men.”

I’m trying to imagine someone saying, “We know what common sense says about playing with matches while standing over a puddle of gasoline. What we wanted you to talk about is the value of our charred experience as women and men who play with matches.

  2. Wow! I hope this bodes well for Sacramento–I too, when I first heard of his appearance at the conference, was worried about what it meant–may God strengthen the bishop!
